Title: Black-Eyed Susans
Author: Julia Heaberlin
Genre: Thriller; Mystery; Suspense.
Synopsis: “As a sixteen-year-old, Tessa Cartwright was found in a Texas field, barely alive amid a scattering of bones, with only fragments of memory as to how she got there. Ever since, the press has pursued her as the lone surviving “Black-Eyed Susan,” the nickname given to the murder victims because of the yellow carpet of wildflowers that flourished above their shared grave. Tessa’s testimony about those tragic hours put a man on death row.
Now, almost two decades later, Tessa is an artist and single mother. In the desolate cold of February, she is shocked to discover a freshly planted patch of black-eyed susans—a summertime bloom—just outside her bedroom window. Terrified at the implications—that she sent the wrong man to prison and the real killer remains at large—Tessa turns to the lawyers working to exonerate the man awaiting execution. But the flowers alone are not proof enough, and the forensic investigation of the still-unidentified bones is progressing too slowly. An innocent life hangs in the balance. The legal team appeals to Tessa to undergo hypnosis to retrieve lost memories—and to share the drawings she produced as part of an experimental therapy shortly after her rescue.
What they don’t know is that Tessa and the scared, fragile girl she was have built a fortress of secrets. As the clock ticks toward the execution, Tessa fears for her sanity, but even more for the safety of her teenaged daughter. Is a serial killer still roaming free, taunting Tessa with a trail of clues? She has no choice but to confront old ghosts and lingering nightmares to finally discover what really happened that night.“
MY RATING: 4.5 Starts
I was really excited to read “Black-Eyed Susans” when I bought it… I found it on goodreads and I just put it in my wishlist because I found it really interesting. When I finally got it I was actually in a reading slump so I kind of waited and I didn’t read it right away, so now, that I finally did it… I quite enjoyed it… I mean, I would say that I loved it but I can’t say it, not because this book wasn’t good, not because the story wasn’t interesting, but because it wasn’t good enough, because it wasn’t as interesting as I wanted it to be.
I really liked the way this book was written and I will obviously recommend this book to everyone even if I didn’t “loved it” because I truly enjoyed it, I liked the characters, I liked the way everything was described in this book, I liked the story, I liked the plot… I just guess that, for me, it was kind of predictable, some parts, not all of them of course because it is suposed to be a suspense, and it is… there are some parts that you are totally without knowing what the hell is happening, but, the important part of the book, which in my opinion is “who the hell is the killer?!” it’s kind of predictable, I mean, at least I could find it really soon.
I had never read anything written by Julia Heaberlin before this book, but I totally plan on doing it… I really want to read more books written by this author because I truly like the way she writes and the way she passes the message she wants to.
The thing I like the most about this book is and will always be the cover… I fell in love with this book cover at the first moment I saw it on Goodreads… I just got sooooo obsessed with it that you can’t even imagine. You have no idea how much I love black-eyed susans, and this cover is just perfect, everything about it is perfect, and I own the hardcover copy which is even more overwhelming.
As I said before at some point, I totally recommend this book to everyone… it is really awesome, and if you like thrillers and mysteries then I’m sure you’ll like this book, I know you’ll enjoy it even if you don’t love it I know you’ll like it. If you are not used to read mysteries and thrillers I’ll still recommend this book to you anyways, maybe this is not your cup of tea, but it is really interesting and it is a really light reading which is pretty good if you are trying to start reading this genre !
